One of the greatest companions of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Hazrat Abdullah IbnMasud (RA) narrated a hadith in which the Messenger of Allah (SWT) said, “Seeking Halal earning is the duty after the duty.”
Through this hadith it becomes clear to us that earning a just, honest and basically halal earning is nothing short of a religious obligation in itself and it’s secondary in importance only to the primary religious obligations like Prayers, Fasting, Zakat, and Hajj. There is no debate in the fact that one of the most important obligations on a Muslim in this world is to earn a just living for himself and his family. According to the hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (RA), the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said,
“O People! Allah (SWT) is al-Tayyib (Pure), and He only accepts that which is pure! Allah has commanded the believers what He has commanded the Messengers, for He said, ‘O Messengers! Eat from the pure foods, and do right,’ and He said, ‘O you who believe! Eat from the pure and good foods We have given you.’”
Then the Prophet (SAW) mentioned a traveller on a long journey, who is dishevelled and dusty, and he stretches forth his hands to the sky, saying, “O my Lord! O my Lord!” – While his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he is nourished unlawfully; how can he (expect to) be answered?
[Reported by Ahmad (2/328), Muslim (2/703), and al-Tirmidhi (5/220) from Abu Hurayrah]
From this hadith, it is clear to see that Allah (SWT) has commanded both the believer and even the Prophets to eat from the pure things. Purity is only achieved when one earns through honest methods and manners and then uses his earnings to buy his halal sustenance. There is one thing to note however, where it is common sense to know that one who earns his living through dishonest means, his earnings will not be halal, however one who earns through halal means but then spends those earnings on restricted things such as alcohol and such, his earnings also will be not accepted. The only way to gain Allah’s (SWT) acceptance is to earn through honest ways and then spend those earnings on honest and permissible things.
Charity is one of the best practices related to Islam charity does not only help those in need but also has great reward for those that give in charity. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said in a hadith,
“Whoever gives charity equivalent to a date, from his pure earnings and Allah only accepts pure then Allah will accept it with His right hand, then He will nurture it for its companion, like one of you nurtures his foal, until it becomes like a mountain.”
[Reported by al-Bukhari (#1410)]
Fearing Haram Earnings
It is a known fact that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions themselves were always carful to how they earned their living and were even careful of the sustenance that came to them from others and did not accept them if they found out that it had been earned through haram means.
Once, a servant of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) came to him with some food, so he ate from it. The servant then asked him, “Do you know where this came from?” He replied, “From where?” The servant responded, “I practised astrology once in the times of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) — even though I am not an expert in it, except that I managed to trick the other person. So he paid me, and gave me what you ate!” Hearing this, Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) put his finger in his mouth and forced himself to vomit up the food, until there was nothing left in his stomach.
