The month of Ramadan is one in which the Quran was sent down as guidance to mankind, with manifest proofs of guidance and the Criterion.1 So let those of you who witness it fast [in] it, and as for someone who is sick or on a journey, let it be a [similar] number of other days. Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire hardship for you, and so that you may complete the number, and magnify Allah for guiding you, and that you may give thanks.
(Quran Surah Baqarah 2:185)
One of the first mentions of the holy month of Ramadan that is found in the Quran is when Allah (SWT) tells us that this is the month in which the Sacred Quran was revealed. In this regard one of the most things that we must do in abundance during this month is to recite and memorize the Quran as best as we are able. In the words of a famous scholar of Islam, that if we let the month of Ramadan pass without knowing a bit more Quran than we used to before it, then we are unfortunate indeed. Ramadan is an excellent opportunity that Allah (SWT) blesses Muslims with that automatically allows them to plan to memorize the Quran accordingly.
First let us take a look at the rewards that come with the memorization of the Quran:
1. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, ‘It is out of reverence to Allah in respecting an aged Muslim, and the one who commits the Qur’an to memory and does not exaggerate pronouncing its letters nor forgets it after memorizing, and to respect the just ruler’.
[Abu Dawud] 2. It will be said to the companion of the Quran: Recite and rise in status, recite as you used to recite in the world, for your status will be at the last verse that you recite.
How to Memorize the Easy Way
Perhaps the most common and the most simple way to learn, recite and memorize the Quran is to repeat extensively what has been read. This method involves the constant repetition of the section that anyone has begun to memorize and usually involves reading the same verses or entire passages up to 100 to 500 times in order to commit them to memory.
Another perhaps easier albeit longer method is to recite one verse and keep repeating it until it has been committed to memory. Although there does not exist an exact number regarding when an verse is committed to memory, most people are of the view that if one verse is recite 10 to 30 times, it is hard to forget, but then again this is not a proven science and how much a person can memorize and how quickly depends on that person’s capabilities. Once one verse has been committed to memory after having repeated it nearly 30 times, move onto the next one and repeat the process. Once it also has been learned, recite the first and second verses together multiple times until you are able to recite the whole passage or section orally without looking at the Quran.
Another method that is more suited to the people that have busy schedules is to acquire the recordings of any of your favourite reciters and listen to it extensively.
How much to Memorize
People that want to memorize always look for information about how much they should memorize in one sitting. What they don’t realize is that how much Quran that a person can memorize depend on his or her capabilities. However there are some methods that the scholars of Islam have come up with to help people start their journey onwards towards the memorization of the entire Quran. For beginners it is a good practice to first memorize the last ten Surahs of the Quran and the first which is Surah Fatiha. All of these are small Surahs with small verses which are easy to commit to memory. Depending on what kind of life a person lives, he or she should schedule a specific number of Ayahs that he or she must memorize daily.
Where to Learn
For those that require guidance with their Quran reciting abilities but don’t have the time or means to attend a mosque or institute, it is best to join an Online Quran Academy for Online Quran memorization. An online Quran academy is similar in teaching styles as that of any regular college or Islamic center with some differences such as one on one interaction with a learned scholar and the ability to choose classes according to your own schedule which makes online Quran memorization a good alternative to regular memorization classes.
