Perhaps the best and most fruitful way to turn over a new leaf is to simply rekindle your relationship with Allah (SWT). Today’s world is filled with misery and malice. It is not hard for people to fall into deep depressions and anxieties where they waste away their life in the wait of death. In fact, due to their anxiety related to their health for example, the more they worry about dying, the more they waste more time that they could be spending with their loved ones and in the worship of Allah (SWT). What most people go through especially Muslims is they start believing the waswasa of the shaitan or the whisperings of the devil. These whisperings usually go something like, you feeling worthless, you thinking that you are messed up and there is no hope for you, you are a sinner and your trials and tribulations are a punishment from Allah (SWT), and perhaps the most dangerous of them all, the devil convinces you that Allah (SWT) has abandoned you. Nothing is further from the truth for Allah (SWT) Himself in His infinite Mercy says in the Quran,
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” (Quran Surah Baqarah 2:186)
Two of the most important things to note is this verse is that Allah (SWT) started the verse with the word ‘When’ and not ‘If’. The second that He did not specify which servants since Allah (SWT) is the Most Merciful, he did not say that I respond to only the pious servants. No He says, ‘My Servants’ whoever they may be, regardless of if they are sinful of sinless. This is an excellent advise to those people who feel hopeless that Allah (SWT) will not listen to us or He has abandoned us. The thing to take away from this verse is the power of Dua.
Dua is one of the most Powerful tools that Allah (SWT) has provided us so much so that it is a fact that a sincere supplication can even change preordained destiny. If you are down in your life and suffering from depressions even after no medical practice is being able to cure you, it is safe to assume that you are suffering from spiritual stagnation. It is always advised to turn back to Allah (SWT) worship Him and make sincere Dua and as ask for relief. There are many supplications that the prophet taught us. Here is one that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to say often,
“Shahr bin Hawshab said: “I said to Umm Salamah (wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ): ‘O Mother of the Believers! What was the supplication that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said most frequently when he was with you?”
She said: ‘The supplication he said most frequently was: “O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.”
She said: ‘So I said: “O Messenger of Allah, why do you supplicate so frequently: ‘O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.1’ He said: ‘O Umm Salamah! Verily, there is no human being except that his heart is between Two Fingers of the Fingers of Allah, so whomsoever He wills He makes steadfast, and whomever He wills He causes to deviate.”
